Where is my mind?

It seems like recently I really didn’t have any time to write on this blog… I feel like I really neglected it. If I look at my last, lousy excuse for a post (which actually just contains an embedded video) it doesn’t look that far off…

So let’s take a look at what’s happening, Steve Jobs died recently which was quite sad for the geek community, the Nokia Windows Phone is out, the worlds on the verge of destroying itself and in Turkey many people are troubled by the recent terror events and the earthquake that shook Van into a deep terror!

If I look back at those events I’m feeling quite lucky for myself, and I’m quite happy that the only thing that is bothering me is actually my CISA exam which I’ll be taking on December 10 this year. As far I can see there is so much on my mind that it disturbingly keeps me from writing something for this blog.

But my fellow readers please bear with me as I’ll be hopefully making up my mind and sharing with you some ‘awesome’ stuff! Until then to keep you busy…

What to do:
1.) Please donate ONLY to the Turkish Crescent to lend a helping hand to the Van Earthquake Victims. Even in times like these there’ll be some people or parties that will use this disastrous moment to fill up their pockets!
2.) Hug someone you care about… (where is my mind?)

What to watch:
1.) Captain America
2.) Sherlock Holmes 2
3.) 2 Broke Girls

What to listen:
1.) The Power Station – Get It On (Bang A Gong)
2.) J. Ralph – Kansas City Shuffle
3.) Bob Sinclar & Raffaella Carrà – Far L’Amore (Club Mix)

Until then Cheerio!

Biletix home of zero customer satisfaction with a dash of hidden surchages!

Money for nothing? Tickets with hidden surcharges!

Money for nothing? Tickets with hidden surcharges!

Again, time passed on very quickly… and I decided to write this entry, which in contrary to the others will be more of a critic. As it is in general throughout Europe, most of the event tickets are being sold through Ticketmaster or other companies. In Turkey, Biletix is the company to look for if you’re looking for a solid event ticket, such as it is with my case, for U2.

The thing that I’ll complain about first of all will be the pricing policy for the tickets and former things I’ve been confronted with. The ticket pricing is shown as 89.00 TL in the iPhone App for the pitch tickets. Which actually is quite reasonable in my opinion, but what happens next? When you try to buy the ticket and you’re being walked through the ‘buy’ screens another 11.00 TL for servicing is being added to the ticket amount and there you are at 100.00 TL. As if this wouldn’t be enough at the very end of this transaction screen you’re being fined another 4.00 TL for processing which aren’t declared on the ticket by the way (so I’m wondering where this money goes to).

So there you are buying a ticket which you expected to be 89.00 TL but came out as 104.00 TL! But this isn’t just the first fob off they’re doing… because I don’t seem to understand at the very same time why, though they’re charging so much for actually nothing and not investing it in their infrastructure. Because in contrast to the U2 concert, events such as soccer games where tickets are being sold on short notice it is almost impossible to get a ticket through the website or the call centre… Why? Because if you try to log on to the website you constantly get various error messages ranging from IIS Load Balancing to Script Errors… and the Call Centre, try to call it, no one will be answering you can be sure of that.

I don’t know if its mismanagement or they just don’t care even though you’re writing a letter of complaint. I get this feeling that they really don’t care about their customers, because they already have a large share in the market. I only hope that one day they’ll understand that transparency for pricing for such goods and services is a priority!

It’s been a long time

Indeed it has been, this blog hasn’t been updated for a while. And yes I can certainly say that I’m well aware of this situation. But it’s so informal that I might as well pretend that I’ve been continuously blogging since the last entry :)

Anyway, sorry for the emptiness that has been going around on this blog. Work has been very busy lately, but I always enjoy the challenge of new things to come… such as preparing a project that will involve Bugzilla and Testopia. I’ll let you know more on this as soon as I’m finished preparing it.

What happened in the meantime? Many things actually… I’ll hopefully remember most of them and I’ll try to mention them.

First off I’d like to start with something that most of us have been desperately expecting. Steve Job’s newest toy, the iPad. Some like it… some hate it, and for sure I’m not going to review it, since I haven’t seen it and I’ve only had the subjective notes passed through from various blogs, users and e-Zines. Of course something else I was wondering recently was that an Apple Employee concerned with the communication protocol of the iPhone 4 had forgotten the prototype with iOS4 in a Bar after a night of partying. I hope he hasn’t been fired yet, as we all know in an age where most companies keep blogs and update their customers, Apple has been known on how to keep secrets better than the NSA or CIA. Another major mobile development in the meantime was, Google’s Android phone… it also received mixed critics. And not to forget Windows 7 which received more critics than the both mentioned mobile devices :)

Other than these mobile busy keepers, Sony Dash has been found in the shelves at Bestbuy as read on yesterdays Engadget. A sad news for today was that iPhone users would not be supplied with Google’s Navigation as reported by Slashgear…
So that’s it with my first entry for a very long, hopefully I’ll be back soon!

Cheers

The IT Crowd (from left to right; Moss, Jen & Roy)

The IT Crowd (from left to right; Moss, Jen & Roy)

It’s a early cold and grey morning here in Istanbul, and as I was strolling around on the Internet. I don’t know… but I can’t resist the temptation of having a look at YouTube. Maybe I’m a addict who knows? While having a look at the search box on YouTube something popped… yes, I had to re-watch the ‘Internet’ scene of “The IT Crowd”. Of course I’m not going to spoil your precious time right now be rewriting the whole series. But somehow I felt like I should really write about one of my favourite shows. For those of you living in the U.K. you can have a look at it on Channel 4, I’m not quite sure, but NBC should cover this show in the U.S. and in Turkey through S’nek TV.

The show plays at Brenholm Industries, in particular at the IT Department located at the lowest-possible level available in a Plaza. The sitcom is written by Graham Linehan and produced by Ash Atalla. The characters are; Roy played Chris O’Dowd an laid-back Irish Nerd, Maurice Moss played by Richard Ayoade a highly intelligent IT Specialist with lack of social skills and least but not last Jen Barber played by Katherine Parkinson, who claimed that she was an IT Expert, though having no idea of the concept. Each Episode lasts about 22 mins and will make you laugh each and every moment you watch it.

Just check your local TV schedule and see if you can find it… it’s really worth watching it.

P.S.: There is acutally one foreign remake of it called, das “iTeam – die Jungs an der Maus” and was broadcast by SAT1 but later on dropped of its negative reviews, NBC planned to do a remake but nobody really knows what happened.

Whose Mobile, His Mobile

Wow, I really can’t believe what’s happening nowadays on the forefront of mobile phones. First of all as most you’ve seen there is a fantastic broad choice of mobiles available on the market now. Ones that have 3G, ones that have 5MP or more MP’s, ones that let you carry your office with you and maybe the next step will be a mobile that will even make your coffee?

Of course there is a price to pay for all the features and added value that you will receive with your mobile phone. Right now I’m still using a Nokia 6300 but I’m quite ambitious for some unknown reason to me, to buy a new device. What I’m seeking and what has come into my way are Smartphones. And of course what I want like everyone is the value for my money.

Apple iPhone 3GS

Apple iPhone 3GS

So I went out into the wilderness of technology to check out what’s going on. My first encounter was of course with the Apple iPhone, in my opinion it’s one of the most innovative phones in means of touch screen technology on mobile devices. Because you don’t need one of those toothpicks to properly control the menu :) But what were they thinking while designing the iPhone? No MMS Support (though it has been added with the latest OS Update), 2MP Cam and little things that just effect of being value added. But anyway who could resist the temptation of owning an iPhone?

Nokia N97

Nokia N97

Then there is the main opponent, the praised Nokia N97… it made recently headlines with its CEO saying that we shouldn’t buy the iPhone and rather get ourselves a N97. For some reason this product is also overpriced as its competitor. But the main advantage we get with the N97 is that we really get something… such as a 5MP cam, 3G at its best (incl. a front cam for video calls), a well designed GPS (but you’ll have to pay to use Nokia Maps) and a Q-Keyboard (might come in handy) to mention. And as a plus the ‘Mini’ has been released, I’m really looking forward to see this product soon in stores.

And of course how could I go on with this article without mentioning Windows CE based phones, there is certainly a broad range of products that are available under this category. Such as the HTC Touch HD, or the Samsung Omnia i900 and others which do have GPS and other products with, let’s say mandatory, features.

As it’s a matter of money to buy these toys I’m going to take my time, but I’ve got to say I’m quite tempted by what the N97 is offering!

Test the best?

For those of you that haven’t have heard the story yet… Windows 7 will be available for sales on October 22nd, but before this Microsoft gives you the chance to download the RC1 and test it. I’ve already started to use the RC1 last week, and quite interestingly it is more stable than Vista!

Of course restrictions may apply as usual. As I’ve setup the 64 bit version on my work PC to test the capabilities I have had certain problems with applications that I used with Vista x86. Such as the Kaspersky AV Client 6.0 but hopefully Kaspersky has released a time limited RC for the RC1 :) , and for those of you using various Audio, Video codec’s, bad news! Most of them don’t work… But they didn’t work on Vista 64 bit too, so actually that’s not bad at all.

So for the good news, your resources will be used much more efficient with 7. And believe me you will feel the difference when using it. So go out there, get your key, get yourself a blank DVD and Download the RC1 from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/dd353205.aspx?ITPID=wcfeed and don’t forget to do this before August 20!

Mac OS vs. Windows, the never ending story!

, , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Have you recently read the news about Kevin Turner COO of Microsoft receiving “the greatest single phone call in the history that he’d ever taken in business”? Because it seems that the “Laptop Hunter” ads from Microsoft are working out quite well and pointing out some really good differences between the Mac and the PC.

So for the story; everyone hopefully knows the “Get a Mac” ads, where PC and Mac present each other, and where to 100% Mac beats PC. Those ads are running right now for very long time, and they’ve been without arguing quite successful. The popularity of those ads, led in an increase of Mac sales. Of course Microsoft prepared a contra commercial, with a popular figure such as Jerry Seinfeld what could go wrong? Actually the commercials were bad, and had no point… I actually still have no idea what they were promoting in the “Shoe Circus” and “New Family” ads. But astonishingly, after these flopping ads, a new series was produced firs the “Real PC Pride” ones, where the ‘Real PC‘ says that he has been turned into a Stereotype and is not alone at all and used by billions of other uses. Shortly afterwards something really unexpected came, non-scripted ads where real people could chose any laptop within their budget limit and the best part was that Microsoft would pay for it! The “Laptop Hunters” simply state that you can get good stuff for good value, which is so true, as Macs are really expensive. And as these ads are unscripted, they represent the views of the actors (e.g. “It seems like you’re paying a lot for the brand” while having a look at a MacBook).

And in relation with the above mentioned we come back to, Microsoft’s COO Kevin Turner who recently announced the “greatest phone call in history” at the 2009 World Wide Partner Conference. Apple’s legal department called in to tell him that they should stop running those ads, because they had just lowered the prices and bumped up their computers! Kevin Turner told that he had taken cartwheels after this call and for a certain moment was actually thinking that this was a prank call (oh what joy!).

As far as I’m reading in the recent days the Tech news, I can clearly say that this worked out for the consumers that will be buying all that stuff. Because consumers can now get a factory upgraded MacBook up to 300$ less than the original retail price. Which actually is a good thing? And it seems like Apple has seen something in these ads and reacted quickly on this matter (such as that their products are overpriced unfortunately).

But when you think the commercial war is over, you’re dearly mistaken. Apple did not just lower the prices and bump up the hardware, they also released their new “Get a Mac” ads. Which feature things such as, reliable “Customer Care”, a computer that never gets a Virus (?!?), never crashes?

In my opinion the war between Mac and PC will last longer than we think, especially with Apple gaining more and more resources through consumer electronic products such as the iPod or the iPhone, trendy products with cool designs and features that are corrected with each and every major model change (not by Firmware or Software update unfortunately) . But let me tell, the Mac isn’t as superior as it sounds in the commercials, and believe me I follow no Computer-religion, if my work can be done with a Mac I use a Mac, if it can be done with a PC I use a PC. And certainly I do have an iPod! I just had to include this part as people tend to be quite sensitive when it comes to their beloved Mac or PC.

First of all, in my opinion Windows is more reliable than Mac OS. The problem with Windows is that it is the major OS on the Market, so it will be always a target to malware, spyware, viruses etc… Why should anyone bother to write something for 5% of the market share? People want to play big, when they want to steal or destroy. And it is known that Mac OS is not a very reliable system when it comes to security, in an article on Computerworld security researcher Charlie Miller had the choice of three systems (Windows Vista Ultimate SP1, Mac OS X 10.5.2 and Ubuntu 7.10) in a PWN to OWN challenge. Miller chose the Mac OS and exploited a flaw in Safari just under 2 minutes. He later told that he chose Mac OS because it was the easiest to hack.

So I don’t think that it is justified to say that Windows is a bad or lame operating system. Think of it like this. One of the reasons probably Mac OS is running so smoothly is that it has actually a certain configuration of hardware that it is shipped with on a Mac. But what would happen if you had a variety of hardware configurations that you can choose of? Would it then also run as reliable as praised on a Mac? I don’t think so! The thing that you have with Apple is that they aren’t just being set out in the wild as Windows is. Therefore Windows is constantly being updated, which means that they are actually developing the system continuously. On the other hand I read an article where Apple was just not making a fix for Java which was revealed by Sun, because they haven’t been against the factors that Windows is up to.

Also if you think about all the programmes that you can get for Windows, Chris Pirillo went back on using Windows XP in an experiment he had started earlier. Because most of the software that he was using weren’t just on Mac… And let’s be honest, there is no system that doesn’t crash if you’re an ordinary user. Even a Mac crashes why do you think that they have a similar key shortcut for “CTRL+ALT+Delete” (and unfortunately most of the time, when you’re Mac is hung up it doesn’t work), also the API provided by Windows, couldn’t be better!

But of course there are certainly fields where you can’t beat a Mac I reckon, such as Desktop Publishing or Music. I’m no Designer, I’m no musician so I can’t comment on these subjects, maybe people in certain fields are in need of Mac. But universally speaking a Windows based computer is just cheaper, you get more value for your money, you can use much more software, and yeah there’s thing with websites. It seems that there are only websites which really only work appropriately with Internet Explorer.

By the way I discovered something recently, if Apple really thinks that there Systems are so good, why don’t they just use it on their websites? See for yourself what Apple and Microsoft do use for their Web servers.

As far as I’ve read through the literature and by what I’ve seen so far, the struggle will go on and hopefully in favour of us, the customers, the people that spend their hard earned money on these devices. And Apple should get a grip and finish off their bugs before judging Windows…

I’m not working for Microsoft, I don’t earn money from them… I actually spend hours and hours administering their systems, fixing their bugs and problems, keeping up their systems because I’m the IT Guy who’s going to work it out again!

RTFM

RTFM with Stalin by PizzasemmelSometimes I just keep on wondering what those mortal computer users would do just without us. How would life be in a world without us, the guys that keep IT running? I actually have no idea at all, but probable scenarios where many people would keep on spending their hours just looking like an idiot at their frozen screens (e.g. “Why doesn’t it work?”), people jumping off the window, killing each other, maybe become flesh eating zombies? Or is it my imagination that is just breaking through?

And even on the most intriguing moments in your life, that you share with family and friends at home or somewhere else, you might hear a phrase like; “Hi, I hope I’m not bothering you at this time of the day (maybe night)? But I was wondering if you could help me out with my Computer???” and on the inside you go like “F@!?” but as tempting as it might sound to say that particular word, you don’t do it and put all your efforts on to solving the problem. And if you should manage to dodge the caller off (even in the most polite way), you’re just another awful person that doesn’t like to help anyone…

It’s not the question that freaks me out from time to time; it’s actually the quality of the question that really does it to me… Because I believe that the first step towards salvation in a computer era is to read the messages that appear on your computer, and to read the frigging manual!

Mortal computer users are not able to read I reckon, therefore I recommend to all IT people that they should use RTFM more often… and if someone should ask what it means, we should all say that it should be Googled! I mean there are billions of resources that can be simply looked up on the Internet by using different search engines, and I believe that people should use those more often at work, instead of looking up recipes and looking for friendship.

I can clearly see that IT loses more resources to maintaining a system and mortal users, than rather investing or upgrading it. And that our abilities are clearly abused by our surroundings (if someone asks you what you are doing for a living simply answer by saying that you are a travelling salesman). But on the other hand, what do I care? Let them live their ignorant lives, if it weren’t for them we would be unemployed by now I guess.

I think I don’t know where to go with this? Anyway just was thinking out loud… ;-)
